2011 24-Hours of Le Mans
With two of their cars already added to the DNF line, Audi Sport’s one remaining machine finished in triumph, taking the checkers in the 79th running of the 24 Heures du Mans. After the two spectacular crashes of Audi’s No.1 and No.3 R18 TDI’s the three man team piloting the No.2, knew there was only one option left; ultimate victory.
Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Bernoít Tréluyer, ended their day 13.8 seconds in front of the No. 9 Peugeot 908 piloted by Sebastien Bourdais, Pedro Lamy and Simon Pagenaud; which was 13.7 seconds faster then they needed to. This was one of the best 24 races in recent history and Audi should be proud of their tremendous effort.
Dr. Ullrich: "Yesterday evening I was very upset because I did not know if Mike Rockenfeller was OK. But I knew that Allan McNish was fine. It was found that the car was solid (smile). The ACO and constructors have worked hard to get there. Yesterday evening, competitors from Peugeot, who are very strong, still had four cars and us alone. We gave our drivers the hardest work we can ask: drive fast and do not take chances. We had worked with Michelin, which is why at the end, we have done five relays with the same tires. The question remained whether the drivers do it too! I can admit now, one more lap and we could not finish we had so little fuel. Each team member has put all his strength in one car. The rain was a big disadvantage of having only one car because we could not test different strategies. So we modeled on the Peugeot # 9. "
